Basic Vehicle Maintenance: Is it important?

Basic Vehicle Maintenance: Is it important?

Why exactly is basic maintenance on your vehicle important?

Depending on what you drive some of your routine maintenance task will vary and how often you do these things will vary as well, but there are a few simple things that every vehicle owner should be checking regularly.

1. Tires

You should be keeping an eye on the air in your tires as well as the amount of tread that is left on them. Having the appropriate amount of air in your tires not only makes sure they last as long as possible but insures you have the smoothest ride possible. As far a tread goes, this insures that your tires have an appropriate amount of traction when traveling down the road, as your tires wear you will not them seeming a little slicker than usual. A good way to insure that your tires are wearing even is to have them rotated anytime you get your oil changed.

2. Fluids

Most people know that they need to get their oil changed frequently but there are other fluids in your car that need to be checked on as well such as coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. Most of these don't require changing as often but should still be watched to make sure there are no leaks anywhere. All of these fluids work with different systems on your car to make sure it is operating smoothly and safely.

3. Battery

Not only does your battery need to be charged but you need to make sure the terminals stay clean from corrosion to insure the cables have a good connection. If you notice that your vehicle seems to be taking a moment to start most auto parts store will be able to do a free battery test and make your battery is staying fully charged. Making sure your battery is charging well and holding that charge is an easy way to keep yourself from getting stranded.

4. Lights

It is always a good idea to periodically check and make sure all your lights are functioning properly on the front and rear of your vehicle. These lights not only help you have better visibility at night but they also allow other drivers to see you and know what you are doing in regards to stopping or turning. Something as simple as a quick walkaround your vehicle, or a cheap bulb replacement, can help prevent a costly accident later on.

There are obviously many more things we could discuss but these 4 are just a few simple things that can be done to make sure your vehicle is operating properly and to the best of its ability.
